This week on The Point:

June 17:  Ocean Education
When it comes to science education, experiences outside the classroom may be as - or even more - important than what’s taught in school. Many ocean educators say there’s no substitute for the experience of getting your hands wet and your feet muddy. We’ll talk with two ocean educators who get students of varying ages out on boats for firsthand encounters with ocean science.
Guests: Jeff Avery, Executive Director of Ocean Quest; Virginia Land McGuire, Dean at Sea Education Association

June 18: Gardening
Horticulturist and Entomologist Roberta Clark joins us for our monthly discussion on gardening.  We have experienced a very wet weather pattern over the last month and Roberta will talk about the impacts of that and moisture related diseases.    According to Cape Cod  Weather dot net the average rainfall for June is Hyannis is three and a half inches, so far we have seen eight and a half  and the month isn’t over.

June 19: Suicide Prevention
According to a Centers for Disease Control report released in May, suicide deaths have surpassed deaths from motor vehicle crashes in recent years in the US. In 2010 there were over 33 thousand deaths from motor vehicle crashes and just over 38 thousand suicides. On the Cape and Islands suicide rates are 1 1/2 times higher than the state average. We’ll talk with Psychologist Michael Abruzzeze and Pyschiatrist Marc Whaley about why the numbers may be increasing and suicide prevention strategies that make a difference.

June 20:  Preventing Teenage Substance Abuse
We talk about Alex’s place a teen center on Martha’s Vineyard which was created in 1998 after Alexandra Gagnon, a summer resident, died after struggling with drug addiction.
In the second half hour we’ll talk with singer-songwriter Kathy Moser about her workshops for people in recovery.
