Cape Students Help Conservationists Restore Lost Wetlands

 Half of the wetlands of our region, many of them small vernal pools, were filled in as Cape Cod became developed. Efforts are underway to reconstruct wetland habitats in several Cape locations, and local environmental and conservation groups are teaming up with educators to involve students in the project on multiple levels. We visit a restoration project happening in Chatham, and talk with students, educators and scientists to discuss how the project can benefit schools and the environment alike. Guests on the program include: Ian Ives, sanctuary director at Mass Audubon Long Pasture; Melinda Forist and Nancy Gifford, seventh grade science teachers at Monomoy Regional Middle School; and Thomas Biebighauser, a recently retired wildlife biologist and wetland ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service and the founder of Wetland Restoration and Training.
