Weekend Outlook: Blessing of the Fleet in Chatham, Memorial Day Events, & more

Steve Heaslip / Cape Cod Times
The Chatham Blessing of the Fleet ceremony from 2008. This year's event takes place this week.

It is Memorial Day weekend, and there are a variety of events to mark the holiday, particularly parades and services on Monday. Here's your rundown.

One of the most visible that has become a tradition in Hyannis is the 24-hour Troops in the Spotlightevent at the Capetown Plaza on Route 132, which starts on Sunday.

Patriotic holidays also celebrate our country, and there are two concerts this weekend with that theme. The Mid Cape Chorus Memorial Day benefit concert “Hometown America”celebrates America. And the Cape Cod Concert Band presents Michael Donovan's homage to Cape Cod.

Fishing is still central to life for many on Cape Cod. The Women of Fishing Families organizes an annual Blessing of the Fleet in Chatham. It happens Saturday, surrounded by a celebration that's about both the fishermen and their families. More info.

Steve Junker and Kathi Scrizzi Driscoll discuss upcoming events each week on All Things Considered. Audio of this week's conversation is posted below - give it a listen.
