Recovery from Addiction for Mothers and Infants

J. Junker

The number of babies born in Massachusetts with opiates in their system is three times the national rate. Opiate using mothers and babies exposed to substances in utero have increased in number in our region: in response, the Cape based Substance Abuse in Pregnancy Task Force was formed. Often pregnant women are fearful of having their babies taken from them, and therefore reticent to admit to their addiction, sometimes foregoing prenatal care. Mindy Todd talks with the leaders of the task force on The Point. They are: Dr. Jean Talbert, OB/GYN and founder of the Substance Abuse in Pregnancy Task Force, Dr. Deborah Heavilin, Co-Chair of the Substance Abuse Pregnancy Task Force and facilitator of Mothers and Infants Recovery Network, and Diane Berry, co-facilitator of the Hyannis Mothers and Infants Recovery Network. For more information about the Hyannis and Falmouth meetings of Mothers and Infants Recovery Network  contact Deborah Heavilin 774-392-0446 or dheavili@comcast.net
