A "rigorous and sustained application of energy for creative purposes" - that's how we are defining marathon for this week's Weekend Outlook. (Yes, we get to make up definitions in this space, too.)
By that measure, writers and actors in Provincetown are throwing themselves into the marathon task of creating theater. The 24-Hour Theater Festival will start with a few random items and plenty of spirit, to produce a play in just 24 hours.
On Nantucket, a true marathon work of authorship -Moby Dick, by Herman Melville - is recipient of marathon reading gusto. From "Call me Ishmael" to a lonely sailor clinging to a floating coffin, you can hear the whole white-whale-of-a-story in just 24 hours.
Also this weekend, FalmouthTheatre Guild open its production of the classic farce“Arsenic and Old Lace” - and audience members should pay close attention to the details of what’s on the stage (hint: look at the old man's portrait!).
If you always wanted to take up sketching, but didn't know where to begin, head to Cotuit Center for the Arts on Friday. If you start your drawing with a bare toe, you may end up in some very unexpected places, thanks to the Brazen Belles Burlesque troupe, who provide the poses and the skits for Dr Sketchy's Multi-Model Cape Cod Drawing Slam. And oh yes, you can buy drinks too.
Steve Junker and Kathi Scrizzi Driscoll discuss upcoming events each week on All Things Considered. This week's conversation is posted above - give it a listen.
