The European Union has voted to ban three pesticides known as neonicotinoids based on evidence that they pose a risk to bees.

Each month, Living Lab Radio checks in with Nature News to talk about some of the latest research headlines. This time we talk with senior reporter Lizzie Gibney at the London bureau.

  • A European spacecraft called Gaia has sent back its first major data dump and astronomers have used that to compile a 3D map of the Milky Way. The Gaia team is making their data available to the science community and some groups are planning data hack-a-thons, saying this could revolutionize our understanding of the Milky Way. 
  • The European Union has voted to ban three pesticides known as neonicotinoids based on evidence that they pose a risk to bees. This has been kind of a long process and quite controversial they’re not even revealing how individual countries voted.
